What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a purified protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Although the toxin is known for causing botulism in its natural form, the highly purified and carefully controlled medical formulation has been used safely in healthcare for decades.
When injected into specific muscles in very small doses, botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. As a result, the targeted muscles relax, reducing unwanted muscle activity without affecting the surrounding tissues.
Today, botulinum toxin is widely used in both medical and aesthetic medicine and has become one of the most extensively studied injectable treatments worldwide.
How Does It Work?
Normally, nerves communicate with muscles by releasing acetylcholine.
Botulinum toxin prevents this signal from reaching the muscle.
The process can be summarized as follows:
Injection into a specific muscle
Uptake by the nerve ending
Temporary blockade of acetylcholine release
Muscle relaxation
Gradual recovery as new nerve endings regenerate
